OUR DAY-TO-DAY

This is what a rehearsal looks like

VoA rehearses every Wednesday from 18:50 to 21:50 in “Udsigten” by Tangkrogen in Aarhus. We start at ten to seven sharp — a slightly odd time, but for good reason. We use the first ten minutes to set up chairs and “hug it out”, so we are completely ready to begin the rehearsal no later than 19:00.

Each rehearsal begins with a short run-through of the evening’s plan. Then we move into warm-up, where we get both body and voice going, gather our energy and train our choir skills within rhythm, intonation, blend and sound. The purpose is both to get ready to sing the evening’s repertoire and to strengthen the technical skills it takes to sing vocal music in VoA.

After warm-up, we work focused on our songs in preparation for upcoming concerts and recordings. Around 20:15, we take a well-deserved fifteen-minute break, where we take turns bringing something delicious. We also use the break for shared announcements before we continue singing for the rest of the evening.

Rehearsal ends at 21:50 — once again, a slightly odd time that makes sure we have tidied up by 22:00. We use the final minutes of the rehearsal to record relevant practice files for home rehearsal and to celebrate the musical wins we have achieved together. And even though rehearsal ends, the social side does not necessarily stop there. We often round off the evening with a cold beer or soft drink and a bit of informal hanging out.

OUR QUALITY

The musical level in VoA

Singing in VoA means being part of a musical community where we create something together that none of us could carry alone.

Our music is performed at a high artistic level — in terms of sound, dynamics and rhythm — and we sing demanding arrangements ranging from 8 to 17 parts. That means it is important that you have a well-developed and healthy vocal technique, strong musicality and solid choral experience, so you can contribute with your own sound while also adapting to the whole.

We value singers’ ability to communicate music with expression, presence and joy. Technique and musicality matter, but what matters most is the ability to tell stories through song — and the desire to contribute to the shared expression.

You do not need to be able to sight-read, but you do need to be able to learn new music quickly, and it is an advantage if you can find your way around a score. We also expect you to have experience performing, and a desire to develop both musically and technically.

We are looking for a group of singers who want to give their very best — both to the music and to the community. We depend on each other, and that is exactly what makes the music powerful and meaningful.

If you are passionate about singing in a choir at a high international level — and believe that music only truly moves people when it is sung with presence — then VoA may be exactly the right place for you.
